About this game
Tormented Souls is a love letter to the fixed-camera survival horror games that ruled the late ’90s, the kind where every hallway could be hiding something and every save felt earned. You play as Caroline Walker, who wakes up half-conscious and wired to strange medical equipment inside a decaying mansion called Winterlake, with no clear memory of how she got there or what happened to the twin girls she was investigating. From that opening scene, the game commits fully to its throwback identity rather than chasing modern horror trends, and that commitment is really the hook.
How it plays
The core loop will feel instantly familiar if you grew up on Resident Evil or Alone in the Dark: explore a limited set of connected areas, scavenge for tools and notes, and use whatever you find to fight off whatever’s lurking in the dark. Ammo and resources are treated as precious, so combat is less about mastery and more about deciding when a fight is worth having at all. Puzzles lean on classic mansion-adventure logic, piecing together journal entries and combining items to unlock new areas. Winterlake also has a twist that separates it from its influences: mirrors act as passageways into an alternate version of the mansion, and moving between the two realities becomes part of how you solve the environment itself, not just a spooky visual gimmick. The camera is fixed in the old-school style, but the controls and camera behavior have been updated so it doesn’t fight you the way some of its inspirations did.
Who it’s for
This one is aimed squarely at people who miss the deliberate pacing of old survival horror, the kind of player who enjoys backtracking through a mansion with a growing mental map rather than sprinting through linear corridors. If you like inventory management, item combining, and puzzles that make you actually write things down, this will scratch that itch. If you want fast combat, big setpieces, or a game that holds your hand toward the next objective, this is going to feel slow and stingy on purpose. It’s also a good pick for anyone who wants a more grounded, atmosphere-first scare instead of jump-scare spectacle.
Is it worth it?
For fans of the genre it’s imitating, Tormented Souls delivers exactly what it promises: a focused, self-contained horror experience built by people who clearly understand what made those classics tense in the first place. It’s not trying to be a twenty-hour epic, and that’s a feature, not a shortcoming, since the format works best when it doesn’t overstay its welcome. If you’ve been craving something in this specific style and haven’t played it yet, it’s the kind of title that’s easy to recommend picking up when it’s discounted, since it rewards patience more than spectacle and holds up well even years after release thanks to how tightly its ideas are executed.
