About this game
The Outlast Trials Deluxe Edition is the dressed-up version of Red Barrels’ cooperative horror spin-off, the one where the found-footage dread of the original Outlast games gets pointed at a squad of friends instead of one unlucky journalist. You’re a test subject at the mercy of the Murkoff Corporation, pushed through brutal “trials” with the vague promise of freedom if you make it through enough of them. It’s the same unsettling, corporate-sinister vibe the series is known for, just restructured around survival with other people instead of sneaking around alone.
How it plays
The core idea is simple to describe and much harder to live through: you and your group are sent into Murkoff’s trials and have to survive them, whether that means pushing through solo or leaning on teammates to get everyone out alive. Completing enough of this so-called therapy is supposedly how you earn your release, though the game is in no hurry to let you feel safe about that promise. The tension comes from not knowing exactly what’s coming next and from being hunted while you try to accomplish whatever the trial demands of you. Because it’s built around groups, a lot of the experience is shaped by how well you and whoever you’re playing with handle panic, communicate, and decide when to help each other versus when to just run.
Who it’s for
This is an easy recommendation for horror fans who’ve wanted a version of Outlast they can survive with friends instead of experiencing alone in the dark. If you liked the atmosphere of the earlier games but always wished you had backup, this scratches that itch. It’s also a good fit for people who enjoy horror as a shared, almost comedic panic experience, the kind of game that’s scarier solo and funnier as a group. If you specifically want the slow-burn, single-player narrative horror the original Outlast games delivered, this isn’t that, and you should know going in that the cooperative structure changes the pacing and tone pretty significantly.
Is it worth it?
For anyone who already knows they enjoy cooperative horror, or who got hooked on Red Barrels’ particular brand of dread in the earlier games, this is a solid pickup, especially once you factor in a deluxe edition’s extra trimmings on top of the base experience. It’s the kind of game that rewards having a regular group to play with rather than going in alone, so if your friends are already circling it, that’s a good signal to jump in together. As with most games built around repeat sessions with friends, it’s well suited to grabbing during a sale rather than paying full price on day one, since the replay value depends heavily on having people to survive it with.
