About this game
If you grew up with a PlayStation and a memory card full of saves at terrifying checkpoints, this is the collection that gets you all the way back there. Aspyr has bundled all six original Tomb Raider games, plus their expansions, into one package, and the headline feature is that you can flip between the chunky original polygon models and a remastered look on the fly. It’s less a remake and more a very well-kept time capsule, which is exactly what makes it worth caring about.
How it plays
The loop across all six games is the same one that made Lara Croft a household name: explore ruins and temples, solve environmental puzzles that hinge on levers, blocks, and precisely timed jumps, and fight off wildlife and human enemies with a limited supply of ammo and health packs. The games take you from Peru to Venice to Egypt and plenty of other places in between, each one leaning on that mix of platforming and puzzle logic rather than modern combat-first design. Because you can toggle the visuals between classic and remastered at any point, you get to decide how much nostalgia versus how much visibility you want. Switching back to the original models is a genuinely interesting way to feel how much tank controls and fixed camera angles shaped the genre. The inclusion of the expansions and all the way through Angel of Darkness means you’re getting the full arc of Lara’s story, warts and all.
Who it’s for
This is for people who either played these games the first time around and want to revisit them without digging up old hardware, or for younger players curious about where the genre actually came from. If you like methodical, puzzle-box level design and don’t mind a game that expects you to read the room before you start jumping, you’ll have a good time. If you need modern checkpointing, forgiving controls, or combat that feels snappy by today’s standards, be aware that the bones of these games are still from the late 90s and early 2000s, remaster or not. Angel of Darkness in particular is notorious for being rougher than the rest, so go in with tempered expectations there.
Is it worth it?
Six full games and their expansions in one collection is a lot of content for anyone who wants to actually sit with this series instead of just sampling one entry. The visual toggle adds real replay value since you can experience the same level two different ways, and that alone sets it apart from a straight re-release. For fans of classic adventure games or anyone building out a collection of genre-defining titles, this is the kind of package that’s worth picking up when it’s discounted, since you’re paying once for what used to be six separate purchases. If you’re only mildly curious, waiting for a sale is the smart move, but for anyone who already knows they love this era of gaming, it earns its spot in the library.
