About this game
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been one of the most beloved RPGs of its generation since launch, and this remaster is CD PROJEKT RED’s own pass at bringing it up to modern standards rather than handing it off and hoping for the best. If you somehow missed it the first time around, or you played it years ago and want an excuse to return, this is a story about Geralt of Rivia hunting across a continent torn apart by war to find Ciri, the daughter he never had, before something far older and far worse gets to her first.
How it plays
How it plays
At the heart of it, you’re playing a witcher: a monster hunter with silver and steel swords, a satchel full of potions and oils, and a handful of combat signs that let you burn, freeze, or shove your way out of trouble. Combat blends swordplay with that light magic, and the remaster brings a reworked skill system and updated combat feel on top of the original’s RPG backbone, so building Geralt still matters even if the specifics of that build system have been refined. Outside of fighting, the game is really a long chain of investigations and choices: following tracks, asking around villages, reading the room on a contract, and then living with what you decided. This version also folds in the two expansion campaigns, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, so the core story isn’t the whole picture. Toussaint and the Hearts of Stone storyline both add their own extended arcs, characters, and consequences on top of the base campaign.
Who it’s for
This is built for people who want an RPG they can sink real time into: fans of dense fantasy worldbuilding, morally gray decisions, and side quests that often hit harder than the main story. If you like games that reward reading item descriptions and NPC dialogue, you’ll be at home here. It’s less suited to anyone who wants fast, arcade-y combat or a tight ten-hour campaign with no fat on it. The Witcher 3 asks for patience in its pacing and its systems, and the remaster doesn’t change that fundamental shape, it just makes the experience look and feel better while you’re in it.
Is it worth it?
For the kind of player who enjoys getting lost in a big single-player RPG, this is about as complete a package as that genre offers: a full campaign plus two well-regarded expansions, all wrapped in a visual and technical refresh. That’s a lot of content for one purchase, and it’s the sort of game you can return to over months rather than burning through in a weekend. If you’ve never played it, a sale is a very reasonable time to jump in, since this isn’t a game that ages out of relevance. If you already own the original and loved it, the decision mostly comes down to how much you value the visual and gameplay improvements versus replaying something you’ve already finished. Either way, it’s the kind of catalog RPG worth grabbing when the price dips rather than paying full price on day one, unless you specifically want to be there for launch.
