About this game

Resident Evil 5 is Capcom’s big co-op swing at the survival horror series, taking the action-heavy direction Resident Evil 4 hinted at and building an entire game around it. This is the version that got dusted off and pushed to Xbox in full HD with a smoother frame rate, and the appeal hasn’t really changed: it’s a tense, gory, over-the-top shooter that works just as well solo as it does with a second player riding shotgun.

How it plays

You spend most of your time shooting, running low on ammo, and managing inventory space while the story unfolds around a dramatic outbreak plot. The single-player and co-op structure is the backbone of the whole experience, and this release stacks a lot on top of that base. You get the Lost in Nightmares and Desperate Escape story expansions folded in, along with Versus mode, extra figures, and four costumes. On top of that, the previously PC-only No Mercy mode made the jump here, and there’s a new mode called The Mercenaries United, which mashes together the classic Mercenaries mode and Mercenaries Reunion into one score-attack playground. If you’ve ever wanted the definitive way to burn through waves of enemies for high scores with a friend, this is where that lives.

Who it’s for

If you like your horror games loud, fast, and cooperative, this is squarely for you. It rewards playing with a partner, whether that’s splitting resources smartly or just covering each other’s back while the screen fills with enemies. Fans of the older, slower Resident Evil games (the ones built around scarce ammo and creeping dread) tend to have mixed feelings about this entry, since it leans hard into action set pieces rather than isolation and tension.
