About this game
LEGO Batman has always been at its best when it takes the Dark Knight’s brooding mythology and lets a little joy back into it, and Legacy of the Dark Knight leans hard into that idea by covering Bruce Wayne’s entire arc, from his training with the League of Shadows through his rise as Gotham’s protector. TT Games builds a full open Gotham around that story, populated with a familiar rogues gallery, and the hook is really the scale of it: this is meant to feel like the definitive LEGO take on Batman’s world rather than just another licensed tie-in.
You spend most of your time moving between story missions and just poking around Gotham, which is the rhythm LEGO games have run on for years now. The campaign follows Bruce Wayne’s journey to becoming Batman and building out his circle of allies, including Jim Gordon, Catwoman, Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl, with each of them playable and bringing their own gadgets and abilities to puzzles and combat. Facing down Joker, Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Bane, and the rest of the rogues gives the missions variety instead of just repeating the same beats with a different villain skin. Outside the story, there’s a genuinely deep collection layer: something like a hundred suits pulled from decades of Batman history, more than twenty vehicles including different Batmobiles and Batcycles to drive around the city, and a huge pile of props and trophies for decorating your own Batcave. If you’re the type of player who likes checking boxes and building out a collection almost as much as playing missions, that side of the game is where a lot of the actual playtime lives.
How it plays
Expect the established LEGO formula: story missions built around character-swapping puzzles, light combat, and plenty of environmental destruction, wrapped around a Gotham City you can freely explore between chapters. Switching among the seven playable characters changes how you approach a given room or puzzle, since each one has distinct gadgets, and the open world gives you somewhere to actually use the vehicles and suits you unlock instead of just admiring them in a menu.
Who it’s for
This is a natural fit for LEGO game regulars, Batman fans who want the character’s history told in one sweeping campaign, and parents looking for something they can hand to a kid without worrying about tone. The co-op-friendly, low-stakes combat and humor-forward writing that the series is known for make it approachable even if you’ve never touched a Batman game before. If you’re after tight, difficult combat or a grim, serious take on the character, this probably isn’t going to scratch that itch.
Is it worth it?
For the audience this is built for, the amount of content on offer, a full origin-to-legend story, seven characters, a hundred suits, twenty-plus vehicles, and a customizable Batcave, adds up to a lot of hours for anyone who likes exploring and collecting as much as finishing the plot. It’s the kind of game that holds up well over time rather than being a quick one-and-done, so catching it on sale is a smart way in if you’re not in a rush to play it at launch.
