About this game

Final Fantasy XVI is Square Enix’s swing at turning its flagship series into a full-blown action game, and it’s a big swing. Gone is the menu-driven, party-based combat the series built its name on; in its place is a single-character brawler where you’re directly controlling every dodge, combo, and summon-sized spectacle on screen. The story follows Clive Rosfield, a knight sworn to protect his younger brother Joshua, whose bond with the Phoenix sets off a chain of events that sends Clive after a rival Eikon, Ifrit, in a world defined by political fracture and buried grudges.

How it plays

Combat centers on Clive, who gradually picks up abilities tied to different Eikons, letting you mix sword techniques with elemental powers on the fly. You’re not locked into one style either; the game lets you decide which of Clive’s abilities to develop and upgrade, and if theory-crafting a build isn’t your thing, you can let upgrades unlock automatically instead. The bigger hook is what happens when two Dominants collide: those fights escalate into full Eikon-versus-Eikon clashes, essentially boss battles on a different scale from the rest of the game. Square Enix also built in two ways to play it: a story-focused mode that handles some evasion and combo execution for you, and an action-focused mode where every input, dodge, and combo is entirely on your shoulders. That split matters more than it might sound, since it lets the game flex toward players who came for the story and players who came to test their reflexes.

Who it’s for

If you’ve been waiting for Final Fantasy to lean fully into cinematic, high-stakes fantasy with combat that rewards timing and reaction rather than menu navigation, this is squarely built for you. Fans of character-action games who still want a strong narrative backbone should feel at home here too, especially once the Eikon battles start ramping up. On the other hand, if you came to Final Fantasy for turn-based strategy, deep party management, or the classic job-system tinkering, this entry is going to feel like a different series wearing familiar clothes. The story-focused mode softens the action demands, but it doesn’t turn this into a slow, tactical RPG, so go in knowing combat reflexes matter no matter which mode you pick.

Is it worth it?

For players who want a single, focused story-driven action RPG rather than something built for dozens of side systems, this is the kind of game that’s worth having in the library, especially once it’s discounted. It’s a full package experience: one protagonist, one central arc, and combat built to keep escalating rather than to sprawl into optional busywork. If you already know you prefer tactical, ensemble-cast Final Fantasy games, a sale price won’t change that mismatch, so it’s smarter to skip it than to buy it just because it’s cheap. But for anyone curious about where the series went with its action pivot, or anyone who just wants a well-produced dark fantasy story with spectacle-heavy boss fights, catching it on sale is a solid way to get in without paying full price for the experiment.
