About this game

FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH picks up right where the story left Midgar in ruins behind them, sending Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith and the rest of the party out into open country for the first time in this retelling. It’s the middle chapter of Square Enix’s three-part remake of the original 1997 game, and it’s built around the idea that this world deserves room to breathe: grassy plains, chocobos to ride across them, and a much bigger stage than the mako-choked city the first game confined you to. If you grew up with the original PS1 classic, this is where the story starts covering territory that changes shape in front of you rather than territory you already know by heart.

The story follows ex-SOLDIER Cloud Strife and his companions as they leave Midgar behind and head out to confront Shinra’s grip on the planet’s lifestream, while Sephiroth’s influence pulls at the edges of everything they do. Zack Fair’s fate outside Midgar runs in parallel, and the game builds toward the party’s journey to the Forgotten Capital, a sequence longtime fans will recognize as one of the most pivotal stretches of the original story. Square Enix has kept the original creative team on this project, and it shows in how much care goes into expanding scenes that were a few lines of text decades ago into fully realized moments.

How it plays

The core loop shifts from Midgar’s corridors to genuine overworld exploration: covering ground on foot or by chocobo, discovering what’s out in the wider world, and moving between story beats at your own pace instead of a fixed critical path. Combat carries over the action-driven, character-switching system the remake introduced, now set against a much larger canvas of environments to fight through. If you’ve played the previous entry, the systems will feel familiar; what’s different here is scale, since Square Enix is using the extra space to let the world and the pacing stretch out in ways Midgar never allowed.

Who it’s for

This one’s for RPG fans who want a story-heavy, character-driven adventure and don’t mind a slower burn between big combat set pieces. If you finished the first remake and have been waiting to see where Cloud’s party goes next, or you’ve got history with the original FFVII and want to see how this team reinterprets the Forgotten Capital arc, this is squarely aimed at you. If you never played the first chapter, you’ll want to start there, since Rebirth is written as a direct continuation and assumes you’re caught up on Midgar’s events and characters. Players who prefer tighter, more linear RPGs over sprawling ones might find the open-world pacing less to their taste.

Is it worth it?

For the audience this is made for, story-driven RPG players invested in this particular retelling, it’s the kind of game you sink real hours into rather than something you finish in a weekend. That makes it a solid candidate to grab whenever it’s discounted, since a game built around this much narrative and world content tends to hold up well over time and won’t feel dated a year or two after release. If you’re on the fence because you haven’t played the earlier chapter, that’s the bigger question to answer first, not whether this one is worth owning.
