About this game

Far Cry 6 drops you into Yara, a fictional Caribbean-inspired nation under the thumb of a dictator named Anton Castillo, and asks you to burn his regime down one outpost at a time. Ubisoft’s open-world shooter formula is well worn by this point, but the setting gives it a different flavor than the series’ usual jungles and mountains: there’s a tropical, almost Cold War-era guerrilla war vibe running through everything, and the game leans into the idea that you’re an underdog scavenging whatever you can find to fight a modern military.

How it plays

At its simplest, you’re liberating territory. You roll into regions controlled by Castillo’s forces, take out checkpoints and bases, and hand them back to the local rebels, opening up more of the map and more resources as you go. The combat encourages improvisation: you’re not just picking up rifles, you’re building homemade weapons out of spare parts, the kind of stuff that feels like it was welded together in someone’s garage rather than issued by an army. Animal companions tag along to scout ahead or rip into enemies, which gives firefights a bit of chaos and personality beyond just gunplay. Traversal is generous too, with horses, boats, helicopters, and scrappy vehicles letting you cover the jungles, beaches, and farmland at your own pace. Missions come through the various rebel factions and communities you ally with, and the campaign can be played start to finish alongside a second player if you’d rather tackle the revolution as a duo.

Who it’s for

If you enjoy open-world games where you can set your own pace, pick fights on your terms, and gradually chip away at a map full of icons, this is squarely in that lane. Fans of the Far Cry series already know what they’re getting, and this entry’s setting and co-op campaign give it enough of its own identity to stand out. People who like a strong central villain and some narrative weight behind their shooting will find that here too. On the other hand, if you’ve burned out on the tower-climbing, checklist-clearing structure of modern Ubisoft games, or you want something tighter and more linear, this probably won’t change your mind. It’s a game built for sinking hours into, not a quick weekend diversion.

Is it worth it?

For the type of player who actually likes losing an afternoon to clearing outposts and tinkering with weapon loadouts, this is the kind of game that rewards a big time investment, and that makes it a natural pickup when it’s discounted. You get a sprawling world, co-op support, and a campaign with real length to it, which adds up to a lot of playtime per dollar if the open-world loop clicks for you. It’s not the kind of game you need to grab the second it launches or the moment a sale starts, since there’s no live-service clock running and nothing here will feel dated waiting in your backlog. But if you’ve been eyeing it, sale pricing is exactly when it makes the most sense to jump in.
