About this game

DOOM: The Dark Ages takes the Slayer out of Hell’s usual haunts and drops him into a grimdark fantasy war, still swinging chainsaws and shotguns but now flanked by dragons and mechs. It’s a prequel, so if you’ve played the last two games you already know how this story ends, but id Software has built an entire new aesthetic and combat toolkit around getting there. The pitch is simple: same brutal DOOM energy, dressed in armor and stone castles instead of Martian bases and neon hellscapes.

How it plays

This is a single-player campaign built around id’s signature push-forward combat, but the toolkit has grown. The Shield Saw gives you a melee and utility option alongside the classic arsenal (yes, the Super Shotgun is back), and glory kills have been reworked to feel more visceral than before. What’s new is the scale: you’ll pilot a massive Atlan mech for some encounters and take to the sky on a Mecha Dragon for others, breaking up the ground-level demon-slaying with bigger, more spectacle-driven sequences. The levels themselves are described as some of the largest id has built, so expect more room to explore between the fights, with secrets tucked into castles, battlefields, and hellscapes along the way.

Who it’s for

If you liked the 2016 reboot or Eternal, this is an easy recommendation. It’s for people who want fast, aggressive first-person combat with a strong power fantasy at its center, not a tactical shooter or a slow-burn horror experience. The medieval-meets-sci-fi setting also makes it appealing if you’re into dark fantasy but want your fantasy served with a rocket launcher instead of a spellbook. If you’re not into DOOM’s brand of relentless, arena-style violence, or you were hoping for a quieter, more atmospheric horror game, this isn’t going to change your mind. Newcomers to the series can jump in too, since it’s a prequel, but longtime fans will get the most out of seeing how the Slayer’s legend actually started.

Is it worth it?

For a single-player campaign from a studio with this pedigree, the value case is straightforward: id has consistently delivered polished, complete shooter experiences without a lot of filler or monetization baggage, and there’s no indication this one breaks that pattern. It’s the kind of game that holds up well whenever you get around to it, since the campaign doesn’t depend on live-service trends or an active online population to stay fun. If you’re the type of player who enjoys big, cinematic single-player shooters and you’re on the fence about full price, this is exactly the type of release worth grabbing when it shows up discounted rather than rushing day one, since the experience itself won’t lose anything by waiting.
