About this game

Crimson Desert Enhanced is Pearl Abyss’s big open-world action adventure, given a fresh coat of paint and a pile of post-launch content for anyone jumping in on PC through the Xbox store. If you missed the original release, this is effectively the definitive version: new cutscenes, more story beats, expanded voice-over and language options, plus everything the live game has picked up since launch, from mounts and pets to customization gear and general quality-of-life fixes. It’s a huge, handcrafted continent called Pywel, and the pitch is simple: wander it, fight in it, and let its smaller daily rhythms pull you along between the big story moments.

How it plays

At the ground level, this is exploration-first. Pywel mixes plains, forests, deserts, and mountains, dotted with ruins, hidden treasures, and landmarks that reward a detour. You’ll eventually head up into the Abyss, a stranger, more mystical layer of the world tied to the main plot. Getting around is part of the fun: horses, a dragon, and mechs all show up as mounts, and the world is built for climbing and gliding off cliffs and walls rather than just walking around them. Combat is where Pearl Abyss leans on its action-game instincts. You’re not locked into one build. Swords, spears, greatswords, axes, dual weapons, and ranged options all sit alongside skill trees and elemental effects you can combine, and fights range from tense one-on-one duels to chaotic large-scale clashes. Outside of battle, there’s a steady stream of lower-stakes activities: gathering, cooking, fishing, hunting, and minigames with NPCs, all of which feed back into your gear and stats rather than existing just for flavor.

Who it’s for

This is a natural fit if you like open-world games you can genuinely get lost in, and if combat with real weight and combo depth matters more to you than a light action-RPG hack-and-slash. Fans of MMO-adjacent life sim systems like gathering, cooking, and mount collecting will find plenty to chew on here too. If you’re after a tightly scripted, story-first campaign with little side content, or you don’t have the patience for a sprawling map full of optional detours, this probably isn’t the one. It rewards curiosity and time investment more than efficiency.

Is it worth it?

For the type of player who wants a big, physical world to sink real hours into, with combat that has actual depth to master, this is the kind of game that earns its keep over time rather than being a quick weekend playthrough. The Enhanced version specifically makes sense if you want the most complete take on the game, since it folds in everything added since launch instead of leaving you to catch up piecemeal. It’s exactly the sort of open-world action game worth grabbing when it’s discounted, especially if you’re the type to explore every corner of a map rather than beeline the main quest.
