How it plays

The campaign is built around co-op play this time, which is a real shift for a series that’s historically been a solo story experience with friends dropped in as an afterthought. You can run it with a squad or solo if you’d rather take it slow and soak in the story. Multiplayer is where a lot of players will actually spend most of their time, and it launches with a solid spread of map sizes, from tight 6v6 arenas built for close-quarters gunfights up to a couple of sprawling 20v20 maps for when you want more chaos and more room to maneuver. The Omnimovement system carries over as the thing that separates this from older Call of Duty entries, letting you dive, slide, and change direction in ways that make firefights feel less scripted. And then there’s Zombies, which stays true to its round-based roots but throws you into the Dark Aether for the biggest map the mode has done in the Black Ops series, a shifting nightmare that rewards players who like to loop, kite, and slowly unravel a map’s secrets over many runs.

Who it’s for

This is squarely for people who already know whether they like Call of Duty. If you’ve enjoyed past Black Ops entries, especially the co-op campaign angle or round-based Zombies, this is more of what you signed up for, with some real structural changes to the campaign format.
