About this game

World War II shooters were everywhere by 2010, but Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway stood out by caring more about the dread of command than the spectacle of combat. Gearbox built the whole game around Operation Market Garden, the real and disastrous Allied push through the Netherlands that was supposed to end the war by Christmas and instead turned into one of the costlier gambles of the campaign. You’re not playing a one-man army here. You’re leading a squad through a battle plan that was already falling apart, and the game leans hard into that tension instead of smoothing it over with easy heroics.

How it plays

The foundation is squad-based tactical shooting rather than straight run-and-gun action. You’re directing fireteams, using suppression and cover to pin down enemy positions, then maneuvering your own men to flank while the enemy is kept honest. It’s a rhythm of locating threats, pinning them, and committing to an attack, which rewards patience over twitch reflexes. Layered on top of that mechanical loop is a story that takes its setting seriously, following the airborne drop into hostile territory and the slow unraveling of a plan that looked clean on paper. The combat and the narrative are meant to reinforce each other: every firefight is also another step deeper into a mission that’s going sideways.

Who it’s for

This one’s for players who want their WWII games to feel like command decisions rather than corridors full of targets. If you enjoy thinking about positioning, want your squad mates to feel like people you’re responsible for rather than disposable AI, and like your war games with a side of real history, this fits well. It’s also a good pick for anyone who misses the squad-tactics shooters that were common in that era and doesn’t see them much anymore. If you want a fast, arcade-style shooter where you’re sprinting and gunning solo, this will feel slower than you’re used to, and the deliberate pacing might frustrate rather than hook you.

Is it worth it?

For the audience that wants tactical squad shooting wrapped in a grounded WWII story, this holds up well as a complete, focused experience rather than a live-service time sink. It’s a single developer’s clear vision of what that genre should feel like, and it doesn’t pad itself out. As an older release, it’s exactly the kind of game that makes sense to grab when it’s discounted rather than at full price. You’re not missing ongoing updates or a multiplayer scene to stay current on. You’re buying a tight, finished campaign, and that’s a much easier call to make when the price drops.
