About this game
Tower Hunter: Erza’s Trial is a 2.5D side-scrolling action RPG that borrows its structure from roguelites and its combat feel from soulslikes, then wraps both around a small, personal story about a girl who made a deal with a demon. Erza can’t actually die for good. Every time she falls in the tower, she’s pulled back to the start, and that reset is the whole premise: a warrior slowly getting better at a climb that keeps punishing her for getting it wrong.
How it plays
You climb a tower built from randomized modules, so the terrain and layout shift between runs even as the broader structure stays familiar. Combat leans on tight, deliberate movement: dodging can cancel out of an attack, jump strength and direction are adjustable rather than fixed, and footsies (spacing, baiting, punishing) matter more than button-mashing. Weapons carry their own light and heavy combos, and you can weave dodges into those strings instead of committing blindly. Special weapon skills and magic come out through simple input commands, the kind of thing longtime Castlevania players will recognize immediately. Outside of combat, you’re also picking a passive rune skill to shape each run, hunting down cards that drop after bosses, and poking around for hidden passages and color-keyed doors tucked into the tower’s corners. Die, and you lose most of what you were carrying, though the game lets you bank a portion of your progress to carry into the next attempt, so runs build on each other instead of starting completely from zero.
Who it’s for
If you like your action games precise rather than forgiving, and you don’t mind losing progress when you mess up a fight, this is worth a look. Fans of 2D soulslikes, Castlevania-style command inputs, and roguelite structure will feel at home fast. It’s less suited to players who want a relaxed story-driven adventure or who bounce off permadeath-adjacent systems; the resource scarcity and repeated climbs are the point, not a side effect, and that can wear on people who just want to see the next area without earning it twice.
Is it worth it?
For what it is, a tightly built indie action game with a clear identity rather than a sprawling AAA production, it’s a reasonable pickup for genre fans even at full price. It’s exactly the kind of title that rewards patience: a single evening might not be enough to appreciate the combat rhythm, but a handful of runs usually is. Since GamesCreed tracks it as a game that goes on sale on Steam, it’s a solid candidate to wishlist and grab during a discount if you’re on the fence, letting you spend more time with the moment-to-moment dodging and weapon combos before deciding how deep you want to go with the license and rune systems.
