About this game
The Tarnishing of Juxtia is a 2D action RPG that wears its Souls-like influences openly, trading the genre’s usual 3D castles and catacombs for hand-crafted pixel art and a score that leans hard into dread. Actual Nerds built it around the idea that boldness should be rewarded, not just punished, which sets it apart from a lot of games in this space that only ever tell you to play it safe.
You explore a series of connected areas packed with enemies, hidden paths, and side content, picking fights with everything from corrupted holy figures to rusted war machines. The combat is built around a system that gives you a burst of stamina and mana regeneration after you land a string of hits in a row, so there’s a real incentive to stay aggressive instead of poking and retreating the whole fight. Bosses are the centerpiece here, and they’re designed to test you across multiple phases rather than settling into one predictable pattern. Beat one and you can hang onto a Relic drawn from its power, saving it up to unleash later when a fight turns against you. Outside of combat, you’re piecing together gear, spells, and Relics into a build that fits how you actually like to play, whether that’s leaning on magic, brute-forcing fights with heavier gear, or something in between. There’s a lot of ground to cover here, and the campaign is built to be a lengthy one rather than a quick weekend run.
Who it’s for
If you already love Souls-style combat and just wish more of it existed in 2D, this is squarely aimed at you. The risk-reward stamina system will especially appeal to players who get bored turtling through fights and want a mechanical reason to push forward. Pixel art fans and people who enjoy dark, grim fantasy settings will also find a lot to like in how the world is put together. On the other hand, if punishing difficulty and boss-focused combat aren’t your thing, or you bounce off games that expect you to learn from repeated deaths, this one is going to frustrate more than it entertains. It’s also not the game to hand someone looking for a short, breezy experience, since it asks for a real time investment to see everything.
Is it worth it?
For the audience that enjoys this style of game, there’s a genuine amount of content and craft here: a long campaign, a deep well of equipment and builds to experiment with, and boss fights meant to be memorable rather than filler. That’s the kind of scope that holds up well over time, since you’re not blowing through it in an afternoon. It’s a good candidate for picking up on sale if you’re not already sure the genre is for you, since the difficulty and combat style are the two things that will make or break your experience. If you already know you love Souls-likes and have a soft spot for pixel art, it’s easy to justify even at full price, but there’s no harm in waiting for a discount to make the decision easier.
