The Evil Within is a straight-up survival horror game from Tango Gameworks, the studio Shinji Mikami built after making his name on the genre in the first place. Bethesda published it back in October 2014, and it plays like someone took the tension of old-school horror and refused to let modern game design smooth off the rough edges. You are not meant to feel powerful here. You are meant to feel hunted, and that discomfort is the whole point.

How it plays

The game puts you in constant scarcity: ammo, healing items, and crafting materials never feel like enough, so every encounter becomes a small negotiation between fighting, fleeing, and sneaking past whatever is stalking you. That scarcity is deliberate. It forces you to plan instead of react, to pick your fights instead of walking into every room guns blazing. The environments themselves do a lot of the storytelling, twisted and unsettling spaces that shift the ground under you both literally and narratively, feeding into a story that unfolds in fragments rather than being handed to you all at once. It is a blend of action and dread in roughly equal measure, closer to a tense standoff than a shooting gallery.

Who it’s for

If you grew up on the kind of horror games where you counted your bullets before opening a door, this is squarely aimed at you. Fans of Resident Evil’s earlier, more punishing entries will recognize the DNA immediately, and anyone who likes horror that makes you manage resources rather than just survive jump scares will feel at home. It is less suited to players who want a breezy, forgiving experience or who bounce off horror that leans hard into discomfort and gore. This is not a game that eases up on you, and it is not trying to be everyone’s cup of tea.

Is it worth it?

For the audience that clicks with it, this is the kind of game that rewards patience and a willingness to replay sections once you understand what you are dealing with. It is not a short, disposable experience, and the tension it builds tends to stick with you after you put the controller down.
