About this game

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon takes the Arthurian myth and asks what’s left of it six centuries after everything fell apart. This is a first-person open-world RPG built by Questline and published by Awaken Realms, and its pitch is simple: a huge, dark fantasy sandbox where you pick a fighting style, wander into trouble, and decide how much of your humanity you’re willing to spend getting through it.

How it plays

You explore Avalon at your own pace across three separate zones, each with its own look and its own cast of quest givers. Combat mixes melee weapons, shields, bows, magic, throwables, and mixtures, with dodging, parrying, and blocking as your defensive toolkit, so fights reward paying attention rather than just swinging harder. Character building is loose by design: you’re meant to combine attributes, skills, and gear into a playstyle that’s yours, whether that’s a spellslinging summoner or a bow-and-shadows type. Outside of combat there’s a whole layer of everyday busywork, fishing, farming, blacksmithing, alchemy, cooking, mining, keeping up a house, that gives the world texture between story beats. The wrinkle that ties it together is the Wyrdness, a nightly shift that makes the world hostile and turns survival instincts back on. Side quests and NPC relationships run deep enough that you can lose whole evenings just following threads that have nothing to do with the main plot.

Who it’s for

If you liked the idea of Skyrim or Kingdom Come: Deliverance but wanted something with more mechanical crunch and a heavier, morally murkier story, this is aimed squarely at you. Players who enjoy building a character from scratch and testing weird combinations will find a lot to chew on, and anyone who likes slower, systems-driven RPGs with survival elements layered on top should feel at home. It’s less suited to people who want tight, curated pacing or a game that holds their hand toward the next objective. With this much size and this many overlapping systems, it can feel sprawling and occasionally rough around the edges, so if you bounce off open-world jank or prefer a more linear action game, this probably isn’t the one.

Is it worth it?

For the RPG crowd this is built for, the amount of content on offer, spanning multiple zones, hundreds of side quests, and a survival layer on top of the core exploration and combat, makes it a strong pick when it shows up in a Steam sale. It’s the kind of game where you’re paying for hours of immersion rather than a tight three-hour experience, so the value case gets stronger the more you enjoy just existing in a world and poking at its systems. If you’re on the fence, it’s a reasonable one to wishlist and grab when the price drops rather than an impulse buy at full price, especially since indie RPGs of this scope tend to keep getting patched and expanded after launch.
