Steep drops you onto a mountain range and basically says: go find your own fun. It’s Ubisoft’s open-world winter sports game built around skiing, snowboarding, wingsuiting, and paragliding across a huge stretch of the Alps, and the whole appeal is that nobody hands you a track. You pick a peak, pick a line, and go, with the terrain itself deciding how the run turns out.

How it plays

The loop is easy to describe and hard to master: drop in somewhere high, choose your discipline, and ride down however you want. Skis and snowboards are for carving groomed runs and stringing tricks together, wingsuits are for threading canyons and cliff lines at speed, and a paraglider is your slow, scenic way to cover ground and set up the next drop. Because the mountain doubles as the level design, a lot of the satisfaction comes from eyeing a ridge or a gap from way off and working out how to actually reach it without wiping out. There are structured challenges scattered across the map if you want something to chase with a score attached, but the game is just as happy to let you free-ride, plot your own custom line down a slope, and save it so friends can try to match or beat it. Other people can drop into your session too, so a quiet solo run can turn into a shared one without much setup. Ubisoft also added an Alaska region as a free update after launch, so there’s more mountain to explore than just the original Alps if you keep playing. There’s also a niche extra for anyone with Tobii eye tracking hardware, which lets your gaze factor into how you read the terrain while you’re moving fast.

This one’s built for players who like open spaces more than checklists, the kind of person who’d rather find their own way down a mountain than follow a waypoint.
