Subnautica drops you into an alien ocean with no map, no rescue on the way, and a life pod that’s barely more than a starting point. It’s a survival game built around the idea that the sea is a place you have to earn your way through, not just swim across, and that mix of curiosity and dread is what makes it stick with people long after they’ve finished it.

How it plays

You start with almost nothing after your crash, so the first hours are about the basics: finding drinkable water, food, and enough scrap to put together simple tools. From there the game opens up into a loop of diving, scavenging, and crafting, where every trip into the water is a trade-off between what you might find and how much oxygen you have left to find it. Early dives keep you in shallow, sunlit reefs, but the real pull of the game is what’s waiting further down. Deeper water means rarer materials, better gear, and also bigger risks, since some of what lives down there is actively looking to eat you. Progression comes from that back-and-forth: better equipment lets you go deeper, and going deeper gets you the resources for even better equipment. Base building adds a home base layer to all this, letting you plant a structure on the seafloor to store your haul, dock vehicles, and top off oxygen between excursions, all while keeping an eye on hull integrity as pressure increases with depth.

If you like survival and crafting games but want something with a stronger sense of place and mystery than the genre usually offers, this is worth your attention. It also rewards players who enjoy exploration for its own sake, since a lot of the appeal is simply not knowing what’s in the next cave or trench until you’re already there. It’s less of a fit if you’re not comfortable with open water and things you can’t see coming, since the game leans into that unease on purpose.
