About this game

Sniper: Ghost Warrior drops you into a country falling apart. Isla Trueno’s elected government has just been overthrown, and a small special ops unit gets sent in to back the rebels who are trying to take it back. You’re the sniper half of that unit, the guy whose job is to solve problems other soldiers can’t, one careful shot at a time. It’s a game built entirely around the idea that patience and a steady trigger finger beat running and gunning, and in 2010 that focus on marksmanship over spectacle was its whole pitch.

How it plays

The core of the game is exactly what the title promises: long-range shooting that actually accounts for physics. Wind, fog, rain, bullet drop and travel time all factor into whether your shot lands, and you’re expected to manage your own breathing to steady your aim before you fire. Land a clean headshot and the game rewards you with a bullet cam that follows the round in, which is a nice bit of payoff for lining up a difficult shot. You’ve got four rifles to work with, the AS50, MSG90, SR25 and SVD Dragunov, each suited to different ranges and situations. Not every mission is pure stillness and scopes, though. The campaign mixes in real-time assault sections and fixed machine gun combat where you’re helping an outnumbered rebel force hold ground, and some missions have you working as either the sniper or the spotter, so you’re not always the one pulling the trigger. There’s multiplayer here too, built around that same sniper-versus-sniper elimination idea.

Who it’s for

This one’s for players who like their shooters slow and deliberate. If you’ve ever wanted a game where lining up a nine-hundred-meter shot and accounting for crosswind feels like the main event rather than a side activity, this scratches that itch. Fans of stealth and recon gameplay, or anyone who enjoyed the sniping segments in other shooters and wished there was a whole game built around them, will find something to like. If you want fast, arcade-style shooting or a tightly scripted blockbuster campaign, look elsewhere. This is a game from a smaller studio with a specific vision, not a AAA spectacle, and it plays like it.
