About this game

Railbreak DX is a from-the-hip redo of a smaller 2023 rail shooter, rebuilt around the idea that arcade zombie shooting still works when the frame rate and the gore budget both go up. You pick a survivor, get locked onto a track through a city that’s already lost the fight against the undead, and shoot your way out. It doesn’t pretend to be anything more sophisticated than that, and it’s better for it.

How it plays

The loop is pure light-gun-style shooting without the light gun: your character moves on rails while you aim and fire at whatever staggers, lunges, or crawls into view. Each survivor comes with a different loadout and a distinct trait, so swapping characters changes the rhythm of a run even when the route stays the same. The story mode strings together six scenarios, and if you want something less structured there’s Score Attack for chasing a high number, Onslaught Mode for surviving an escalating meat grinder with no finish line, and Glitch Gauntlet, which throws rogue-like randomness into the mix so no run plays out quite the same way. A practice mode gives you room to get familiar with a character’s weapon before taking it into a real scenario, and the whole thing supports two-player co-op from start to finish, which is where this kind of game tends to earn its keep.

Who it’s for

This is for people who grew up feeding quarters into House of the Dead style cabinets, or who just like the specific pleasure of clearing a screen full of enemies without worrying about cover systems or skill trees. Co-op players get extra mileage here since the whole campaign is built to be played with a second person, and it’s a genuinely fun couch or online pairing if you’ve got a friend who’s into schlocky horror. If you want deep character progression, branching narrative choices, or a slow-burn survival horror atmosphere, this isn’t that game. Is it worth it?

For what it is, an on-rails arcade shooter with a real visual overhaul, multiple bonus modes, and full co-op support, there’s a decent amount here to chew on if that genre is your thing.
