About this game

Holdfast: Nations At War takes the idea of a big multiplayer shooter and splits it across two eras that don’t usually share a game: Napoleonic-era warfare and the trenches of World War I. Anvil Game Studios built it around scale first, with servers holding well over a hundred players at once, so a single match can feel less like a shooter lobby and more like an actual campaign playing out across a map.

How it plays

The core loop is line-warfare combat rebuilt for a modern shooter. On the Napoleonic side you’re marching in formation, loading muskets, and closing distance for a bayonet charge, or you’re commanding troops and directing where the fight goes. Switch to the WWI setting and the pace changes to trench-to-trench fighting, with the added spectacle of dreadnoughts shelling beachheads. Across both eras there are more than two dozen classes to pick from, so infantry, cavalry, and officer roles all play differently, and naval combat adds another layer if you’d rather crew a warship than storm a beach. Proximity voice chat is a big part of what holds a match together: you hear the soldiers around you, not just your squad, which pushes matches toward actual coordination and, from what players describe, a fair amount of in-character roleplay. With eight factions and a large pool of maps to rotate through, no two sessions play out quite the same.

Who it’s for

This is a game for people who like their multiplayer shooters slower, more tactical, and genuinely social. If you enjoy historical settings, large-scale coordination, or games where a proximity mic turns strangers into a functioning unit, this fits that itch well. It also tends to reward people who like community and roleplay elements layered on top of combat, since that’s clearly part of the culture here. If you want a fast, twitchy arena shooter or a tight single-player story, look elsewhere. This isn’t built for solo play, and the pace of musket reloads and formation fighting will feel sluggish if you’re coming from something like a modern military shooter.

Is it worth it?

For the audience that actually wants this kind of large-scale historical combat, there’s a lot of substance here: two distinct settings, a wide class selection, naval battles, and a big map pool all under one game, which is more variety than a lot of niche multiplayer shooters offer. It’s the kind of game where the value comes from how much time you sink into learning classes and finding a faction or unit you click with, so it rewards players who stick around rather than those looking for a quick single session. If historical multiplayer combat is already your thing, or you’ve been curious about it, this is a solid one to pick up when it’s discounted rather than paying full price on a whim, since it benefits from going in with realistic expectations about pace and commitment.
