About this game

Hogwarts Legacy dropped you into the wizarding world as a student with a weird problem: an ability to sense ancient magic that most witches and wizards have forgotten even exists. It’s an open-world action RPG built on the Harry Potter setting, but it isn’t trying to retell the books. You’re a nobody who stumbles into a centuries-old secret, and the game is basically your excuse to walk the halls, argue with ghosts, and eventually throw curses at goblins in a swamp somewhere south of the castle.

How it plays

The loop is familiar if you’ve played any open-world RPG in the last decade, just reskinned with wands. You explore Hogwarts and the surrounding Highlands, pick up quests from professors and classmates, and slowly build out a spell list that goes from basic levitation and disarming charms to genuinely nasty combat magic. Combat is real-time and encourages juggling spells rather than mashing one button, since different enemies shrug off different curses. Outside of fighting, there’s a full crafting and gear system for potions and plants, a talent tree to shape your build, and a mount for covering ground once the map opens up. Class time, beast-taming, and a customizable character round out the RPG side, and later editions folded in a photo mode and the ability to reset your talents if you want to rebuild your character without starting over.

Who it’s for

If you grew up with the books or films and have ever wanted to just exist in that world rather than watch someone else save it, this scratches that itch better than almost anything else has. It’s also a solid pick for open-world RPG fans in general, the kind of player who enjoys ticking off map icons, hunting collectibles, and slowly turning a weak character into an overpowered one. It’s less suited to people who want tight, focused design. The main story is fairly linear and story-driven, while the open world around it can feel padded with repetitive side content, so if you burn out on Ubisoft-style map clutter, temper your expectations. It’s also single-player through and through, so don’t go in looking for anything social.

Is it worth it?

For fans of the setting, this is close to a must-play, there’s a real sense of place here that a lot of licensed games never manage.
