About this game

Hades II picks up right where the original left off in reputation, if not in story. Supergiant Games built its name on turning roguelike structure into something that actually cares about character and mood, and here the hook is playing as Melinoe, an immortal witch-princess of the Underworld, hunting down the Titan of Time across a mythic world that keeps rearranging itself around you. If you spent dozens of hours in the first game feeling weirdly attached to a cast of gods and monsters, this is the sequel built to scratch that same itch with a new protagonist and a new set of problems to punch through.

How it plays

The loop is still the thing: you head out, fight through hostile territory, die (a lot), and come back a little stronger, a little wiser about what killed you last time. Combat runs on Melinoe’s Weapons of Night, which you can infuse with witchcraft, and you stack Boons from Olympian gods on top of that to shape each run into its own build. No two trips out feel quite the same once you start mixing and matching. Outside of combat there’s a whole layer of relationship-building and world-poking: talking to the same characters run after run, watching their arcs shift depending on how your last attempt went, digging into systems like the Altar of Ashes and gathering reagents through the Tools of the Unseen. It’s a roguelike that rewards repetition instead of punishing it, since every death still moves something forward.

Who it’s for

This is an easy recommendation if you liked the first Hades, if you’re into character-driven storytelling wrapped around real mechanical depth, or if you just want a well-made action game that respects your time without demanding you master something punishingly difficult (God Mode is right there if you need it). It’s less of a fit if roguelikes in general wear you out, if repeated attempts at the same content sounds like a chore rather than a hook, or if you’re allergic to games that ask you to piece together plot through overheard conversations and recurring characters rather than cutscenes up front.

Is it worth it?

Supergiant doesn’t really put out throwaway games, and this one leans into everything that made its predecessor stick around in people’s rotations for years. For the kind of player who enjoys build variety, strong art direction, and a story that rewards showing up again and again, the amount of content and replay value here holds up well against the asking price. It’s also exactly the type of game that’s worth grabbing the moment it’s discounted, since it’s not the sort of thing that goes stale. If you’re on the fence, waiting for a sale costs you nothing but time, and it’s a safe one to add to the backlog whenever the price drops.
