About this game
DOOM Eternal is the sequel that took the 2016 reboot’s “glory kill everything” philosophy and turned it into something closer to a combat puzzle. You’re the Slayer again, humanity’s last answer to an actual demonic invasion of Earth, and the pitch is simple: hell came to you, so now you’re going to hell. The hook isn’t the story, though. It’s how fast and how violent the combat gets once you learn to read it.
How it plays
At a glance it’s a first-person shooter, but the real engine underneath is resource management under pressure. Glory kills refill health, the flamethrower strips armor off enemies, and the chainsaw turns demons into ammo. None of those are side options you can ignore, they’re the loop. You’re constantly cycling between them while dodging projectiles and juggling a growing arsenal of guns, each with mods that change how they function. Add the wrist blade and other mobility and utility tools, and encounters start to feel like you’re conducting a fight rather than just shooting your way through it. Outside the campaign, Battlemode drops one armed Slayer against two players controlling demons in short, competitive rounds, a different rhythm from the single-player chaos but built on the same fast, aggressive instincts.
Who it’s for
If you liked the 2016 DOOM and wanted it pushed further, this is exactly that. It also rewards people who enjoy shooters with real mechanical depth, the kind where you’re expected to get better at managing cooldowns and prioritizing targets rather than just aiming well. It’s less kind to players who want a chill, point-and-shoot experience or a slow-burn story-driven campaign. The difficulty curve asks you to engage with its systems, and if you’d rather not think that hard about resource cycling mid-fight, it can feel demanding in a way some shooters aren’t.
Is it worth it?
For anyone who already knows they like fast, mechanically dense shooters, this is the kind of single-player campaign that holds up well years later, since the design isn’t chasing trends, it’s built around a combat system that still feels distinct. It’s a solid pickup on sale for players who missed it the first time around or who bounced off the original DOOM reboot but are curious whether the sequel’s deeper systems click better for them. If you’re unsure whether the glory kill, incinerate, chainsaw loop is your thing, a discount is a reasonable way to find out without committing at full price.
