How it plays

Dishonored drops you into a plague-ridden city as Corvo Attano, a bodyguard framed for murder and out to settle the score. The game hands you supernatural powers, a mix of steel and gadgets, and then mostly gets out of the way. Every target can be reached and dealt with in more than one way, whether that means teleporting across rooftops, slipping past guards unseen, or wading in with a sword. The Definitive Edition folds in the extra content that came after launch: the Void Walker’s Arsenal, which adds character bonuses and more bone charm slots for players who want to lean harder into their preferred playstyle, and the Dunwall City Trials, a set of standalone challenges built around combat, stealth, and movement rather than the main story. On top of that, you get The Knife of Dunwall and The Brigmore Witches, two chapters that step outside Corvo’s perspective to let you play as the assassin Daud, giving the whole package a second point of view on the same city and its politics.

Who it’s for

If you like games that reward planning and improvisation over memorizing a script, this is squarely for you. People who enjoyed Deus Ex or the Hitman games for their open-ended approach to a problem will feel at home here, and so will anyone who just likes a good moody, steampunk-ish city to explore. It’s also a good fit for players who want closure on the extra story content instead of chasing it down piecemeal. On the other hand, if you want a game that tells you the “right” way to play, or you’re not interested in stealth and improvisation at all, it’s going to feel like it’s asking more of you than you want to give. It’s also worth knowing going in that this is a single-player experience built around one city and one throughline, not something with endless replay hooks beyond the trial challenges.

Is it worth it?

For anyone who missed it the first time around, or who played the original but never touched the add-on chapters, the Definitive Edition is the version to have. You’re getting the base campaign plus everything Arkane built on top of it, which is a healthy amount of game for one purchase. It’s the kind of title that holds up well years later because its ideas (freedom of approach, a strong sense of place, powers that actually change how you move through a level) don’t really age. If you see it discounted, it’s an easy pickup, especially since owning it complete removes the awkwardness of deciding which expansions are worth adding on separately.
