About this game
Dex is a 2D cyberpunk action-RPG from Dreadlocks that wears its influences on its sleeve, borrowing the mood of Blade Runner and the paranoid corporate-hacker energy of Neuromancer and pouring it into an old-school side-scrolling frame. You’re on the run from a shadowy organization with reach across the entire city of Harbor Prime, and how you survive that chase, sneaking, shooting, talking, or slicing through firewalls, is left almost entirely up to you.
How it plays
At the ground level, Dex is a side-scrolling action game: you run, jump, and fight your way through Harbor Prime’s districts in real time, picking fights or avoiding them depending on how you’ve built your character. Layered on top of that is a proper RPG skeleton. You earn augmentations, cybernetic implants that grant abilities beyond normal human limits and, more importantly, unlock routes through the world that wouldn’t otherwise be accessible. Conversations aren’t just flavor text either; dialogue choices shape how situations resolve, which matters if you’re leaning toward talking your way past a problem instead of shooting through it. Then there’s the hacking layer: stepping into Cyberspace turns the game into something closer to a separate mini-game, where you’re fighting through viruses and security programs to disable turrets, fry equipment, or lift data you weren’t supposed to touch. It’s less a checklist of modes and more a set of tools that all point at the same open city, letting you decide which of them you actually want to master.
Who it’s for
If you grew up on 2D platformers and side-scrolling action games and always wished more of them had dialogue trees and skill points, this hits that spot directly. It also rewards the kind of player who likes picking a build and sticking to it, stealth specialist, smooth-talker, or straight-up gunslinger, rather than someone hoping for a modern twin-stick shooter or a slick 3D open world. If your idea of cyberpunk starts and ends with big-budget spectacle, the scrappier, indie scale here might feel modest by comparison. But if you want a game that treats its genre influences with real affection and lets you actually roleplay through a noir-ish city instead of just looking at one, it delivers.
Is it worth it?
For fans of the genre blend it’s chasing, action, RPG systems, and a hacking layer, Dex offers a good amount of game to sink into, and it’s the sort of niche, well-loved indie title that’s easy to recommend picking up during a sale rather than paying full price upfront. It’s not a game that demands day-one urgency; there’s no live-service clock running, so waiting for a discount costs you nothing and only makes the value case stronger.
