Code Vein II picks up the series’ blood-drinking, soulslike combat and drops it into a much bigger story: humans and Revenants sharing a crumbling world, a mysterious phenomenon called the Luna Rapacis turning Revenants into mindless Horrors, and a time-traveling companion named Lou who can send you into the past to change what’s already happened. It’s a sequel that leans into the original’s best idea (that vampiric blood mechanic) while widening the scope into a present-and-past structure that gives the story more room to breathe.

How it plays

At the heart of it is the same push and pull that defined the first game: you’re draining blood from enemies to fuel special skills, then deciding how to spend that resource in the middle of a fight. The sequel brings a new build system on top of that, letting you rework weapons and skills more freely so your playstyle isn’t locked into one archetype for the whole run. Combat sounds like it rewards patience and observation, reading what an enemy is about to do and punishing it, rather than just mashing through encounters. You’re not doing this alone, either. Partner characters fight alongside you and can boost your own abilities, and since the story has you jumping between the present and the past, expect those partnerships and the choices tied to them to actually matter to how the plot unfolds, not just sit there as flavor.

Who it’s for

This is squarely for people who like their RPGs hard but fair, the kind of player who gets satisfaction out of learning an enemy’s rhythm rather than overleveling past it. If you enjoyed the first Code Vein, or you’re generally into the Soulslike genre but want something with a stronger emphasis on characters and a more personal story than the genre usually offers, this fits that niche well. If punishing combat isn’t your thing, or you’d rather have a game that holds your hand through its mechanics, this probably isn’t going to convert you. It’s also worth going in with the expectation that this is a story-heavy sequel, so if you skipped the first game entirely, you might want to at least read up on it before diving into the time-travel plot here.

Is it worth it?

For fans of the genre, this is the kind of game that earns its price through sheer time investment: bosses you’ll die to repeatedly before it clicks, a build system to tinker with, and a story structure built around exploring both a present-day world and its past. That’s a lot of game to chew on, and it’s exactly the type of release that rewards patience over a quick playthrough. If you’re on the fence, it’s a strong candidate to pick up when it’s discounted rather than day one, since the core loop (fight, drain, build, repeat) is something you’ll want to sit with over weeks, not rush through in a weekend.
