About this game
Caveblazers drops you into a cave that supposedly hides “unimaginable power,” hands you a sword, and lets a procedurally generated dungeon do the rest. It’s a roguelike platformer from Deadpan Games that leans hard into fast, physical combat rather than the usual stat-crunching, and every run is built to be a little different from the last, right up until something enormous with a screen-wide health bar kills you.
How it plays
Each descent starts from scratch: new layout, new item drops, new monster placements, and no guarantee you’ll survive to see what’s on the next floor. Death is permanent, so the tension comes from deciding whether that unidentified potion is worth drinking or whether you should just keep hoarding gold. Along the way you’ll pick up weapons and gear that change how combat feels, and the game clearly wants melee fights to be visceral rather than a matter of clicking on things until they die, with blood effects that make every hit register. You’re not always alone down there either; some characters you meet will fight alongside you and actually keep pace as you move, while others hunt you with real persistence. Every stretch between areas ends with a boss fight, and each one apparently demands its own approach rather than reusing the same pattern with a bigger health pool. On top of the core loop, there’s a rotating daily challenge that gives everyone the same starting loadout and traits for one shot at a run, plus a set of side challenges for players chasing extra unlocks like cosmetics.
Who it’s for
If you like roguelikes but find some of them too cerebral or too slow, this is aimed at you. It’s for people who want a platformer that rewards quick reflexes and good instincts in a fight, not just careful inventory math. Fans of permadeath runs who enjoy the “one more try” pull will feel right at home, especially with a daily challenge to chase. It’s less suited to players who want a long, plotted campaign or deep character progression that carries between runs; this is a game about mastering a system through repetition, not following a story. If you bounce off games where death sends you back to square one, this genre in general might frustrate more than it satisfies.
Is it worth it?
For the kind of player who actually enjoys roguelike platformers, this is the sort of game that earns its keep through replayability rather than length. There’s no fixed ending to burn through and forget; the appeal is entirely in how different each run feels and how much better you get at reading the cave over time. That makes it a genuinely good candidate to grab whenever it’s discounted, since the value only grows the more sessions you put into it, and short, replayable action games like this tend to reward an opportunistic purchase rather than demanding full price on day one.
