About this game

Baldur’s Gate 3 is Larian Studios’ massive take on Dungeons & Dragons, and it’s the kind of game that swallows a free weekend whole. You start as someone infected by a mind flayer parasite, slowly turning into something monstrous while gaining strange new powers from it, and everything that follows spins out of that central tension between the thing growing inside you and the choices you make to control it, resist it, or exploit it. It’s a story-first RPG built on tabletop rules, and it wears that D&D heritage proudly rather than hiding it.

How it plays

You build a character from D&D’s usual roster of races and classes, or pick one of the pre-made origin characters who each come with their own backstory woven into the main plot. From there it’s classic party-based RPG structure: recruit companions, manage relationships with them, explore, fight, loot, and make dialogue choices that actually branch. Combat runs on turn-based D&D rules, and the world rewards curiosity, since climbing, sneaking, shoving enemies off ledges, and using verticality are treated as real tactical options rather than flourishes. You can play solo with a full party of AI companions, or bring in friends, with support for up to four players online and split-screen co-op for two on one Xbox. Characters can split off to chase their own side quests and regroup later, so a multiplayer session doesn’t have to mean everyone doing the same thing at the same time.

Who it’s for

This is a game for people who like their RPGs dense: reading dialogue, weighing consequences, and experimenting with builds and tactics rather than clicking through a story on rails. If you grew up on tabletop D&D or classic CRPGs, the systems will feel like home. It’s also a great pick for a small group of friends who want a long-term co-op project instead of a quick multiplayer fix. On the flip side, if you want something breezy you can finish in a weekend, or you’re not interested in turn-based combat and heavy narrative branching, this probably isn’t the game that converts you. It asks for patience and attention, and it gives a lot back for both.

Is it worth it?

For the kind of player who enjoys getting lost in a world with real choices and consequences, this is about as much game as you can ask for from a single release. The scope alone, a full campaign built for both solo and cooperative play, means the cost per hour of engagement tends to work out well even at full price. On sale, it becomes an easy recommendation: the kind of purchase you make once and return to for a long time, whether that’s a single deep playthrough or multiple runs with different characters and approaches. If it’s been sitting on your wishlist, a discount is a good nudge to finally start it.
