About this game

Atlantis Evolution drops you into the shoes of Curtis Hewitt, a photo-journalist who gets pulled through a vortex and lands in the middle of a hidden, technologically advanced civilization built on old-world faith and newer machinery. It’s the kind of premise adventure games love: an ordinary guy thrown into an extraordinary place, forced to learn its rules fast enough to survive them and, eventually, question the gods running the show.

How it plays

This is a story-driven adventure built around exploration and problem-solving rather than reflexes. You’ll move through a string of very different locations, starting on a 1904 freighter crossing from Patagonia to New York before the story pulls you into New Atlantis itself: a rural village steeped in tradition, a forest the locals refuse to enter, a cave system that clearly isn’t safe, and eventually a journey 8,000 years into the past to see the lost city as it once stood. Along the way you’re piecing together Atlantian customs and history as much as you’re solving puzzles, and the back half of the game pushes toward a direct confrontation with the ruling gods themselves. The whole thing is framed as a character-driven narrative, so expect the pacing to favor storytelling and set-piece environments over open-ended systems.

Who it’s for

If you grew up on narrative adventure games and miss the era when a “sci-fi meets mythology” setup was reason enough to buy something, this is squarely aimed at you. The mix of a lost civilization, ancient gods, and a fish-out-of-water protagonist gives it a pulpy, Jules Verne-by-way-of-Atlantis energy that fans of story-first exploration games tend to enjoy. It’s less of a fit if you want mechanical depth, combat, or a fast-twitch pace. This is a slower burn built on atmosphere and discovery, and players looking for that will get more out of it than players hoping for action.

Is it worth it?

For anyone who already knows they like this style of adventure game, it’s an easy recommendation on sale. Games like this live or die on setting and story rather than mechanical polish, and the premise here has enough going on (time travel, a hidden society, a moral reckoning with false gods) to carry a full playthrough. If you’re new to the genre, it’s a reasonable low-risk way to find out whether it clicks with you, since the cost of trying it during a GOG discount is low compared to picking it up at full price on a whim. It’s not a system-seller, but it’s a solid pickup for the right audience when the price drops.
