About this game

Assassin’s Creed Shadows drops you into feudal Japan and hands you two very different ways to experience it. You get Naoe, a shinobi built for stealth and quiet kills, and Yasuke, a samurai who’d rather just walk through the front door swinging. Ubisoft has built entire games around one protagonist archetype before, but pairing a dedicated infiltrator with a dedicated brawler in the same open world is the real hook here, and it changes how you approach nearly every objective you’re given.

How it plays

Playing as Naoe means reading the environment: using light, sound, and shadow to slip past guards, climbing with an expanded parkour toolkit that now includes a grappling hook, and thinning out patrols with shuriken or smoke bombs before finishing a target with the Hidden Blade. Switch to Yasuke and the tone shifts entirely. He can drop enemies quietly with a bow, but he’s just as happy wading in with a katana or naginata and letting momentum carry him through a fight. The world around both characters isn’t static either. Seasons change, weather shifts, and the environment itself can be altered in ways that affect how you plan an approach, so the same castle town can play very differently depending on when and how you hit it. It’s all running on an updated version of Ubisoft’s Anvil engine, and if you want the full effect, there’s a Japanese voiceover option that makes the setting feel even more grounded.

Who it’s for

If you’ve enjoyed the more stealth-focused entries in the series, or you’ve just wanted an Assassin’s Creed game that leans harder into ninja fantasy instead of straightforward swordplay, this is built for you. History buffs and anyone who’s wanted a good excuse to wander a beautifully rendered version of feudal Japan will get a lot out of it too. Where it might not land is with players who want a tight, focused campaign rather than a sprawling open world, or anyone who’s grown tired of the series’ habit of stacking activities on top of activities. If big AC-style maps have worn you down in the past, know going in that Shadows is still very much that kind of game, just with a sharper stealth system and a second character to keep things from feeling repetitive.

Is it worth it?

For players who like sinking dozens of hours into one world, this is the kind of game that rewards patience: two playstyles to master, a setting with real texture to it, and enough systems layered in that you’re unlikely to run out of things to do before you run out of interest. It’s not a weekend game, so go in expecting a real commitment rather than something you’ll finish in a few sittings. That kind of scope is exactly what makes it worth watching for a sale. You’re not paying for a few hours of content, you’re paying for a world you can live in for a while, and that math gets a lot more comfortable once the price comes down.
