About this game

Opening

Alice VR takes the bones of Lewis Carroll’s story and drops them into a science-fiction shell: you’re a lone survivor woken from cryosleep after your ship malfunctions, forced to land on an unfamiliar planet whose entire population has vanished. From there Carbon Studio builds a moody, puzzle-heavy exploration game that borrows Wonderland’s cast (yes, the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter both show up) and recasts them as figures in this abandoned sci-fi world. The hook isn’t really the Alice license, it’s the setting: familiar characters in a place that feels nothing like a storybook.

How it plays

The core loop is exploration and problem-solving rather than combat. You wander the planet’s environments looking for fuel to escape, and along the way you run into a large stack of puzzles built around the game’s physics gimmicks: shifting gravity that lets you walk across walls and ceilings, and devices that shrink or grow objects (and presumably you) to open up new paths. It’s less about reflexes and more about reading a space, figuring out what tool or trick applies, and working through the logic of a room. The story runs alongside all of this and branches toward multiple endings, so how you approach the planet’s mystery has some bearing on where it ends up. It was built specifically with VR headsets in mind, supporting motion controllers on some platforms and traditional controllers on others, though it’s also playable flat on a monitor if you don’t have a headset.

Who it’s for

This is a good fit if you like slower, atmospheric adventure games that reward patience and spatial thinking over quick reactions, and if you have any fondness for Wonderland reimagined as something stranger and colder. VR owners in particular get the most out of it, since the gravity-bending and scale-shifting puzzles were clearly designed around that sense of physical presence. If you want action, tight combat, or a game that moves briskly, this isn’t it. Puzzle fatigue is also worth considering going in: with a large number of puzzles stacked back to back, it can wear on players who don’t enjoy that style for long stretches.

Is it worth it?

For the audience it’s built for, story-driven puzzle fans and especially VR players hunting for an early, ambitious headset title, there’s a reasonable amount here: a full narrative campaign, a large puzzle count, and a soundtrack and artbook bundled in for people who like that kind of extra. It’s not a game built for mass appeal, so going in expecting a broad, universally beloved classic would be the wrong frame. This is exactly the kind of niche, atmosphere-first title that’s much easier to recommend once it’s discounted, since it rewards a particular taste rather than everyone’s.
