About this game

How it plays

Ghost Recon Wildlands drops you into a fictionalized Bolivia that’s been taken over by a cartel, and the whole game is built around chipping away at that organization piece by piece. You lead a four-person team of Ghosts through a genuinely huge, open map, choosing your own route into missions rather than following a scripted corridor. That means you can post up on a ridge and pick a compound apart with a sniper rifle, roll in loud with trucks and gunfire, or send a drone ahead to tag every guard before you set foot near the objective. Vehicles matter a lot here too. Ground transport, boats, helicopters, you’re constantly hopping between them just to cover the terrain, and the driving and flying feel more like a means to an end than a side activity, which fits an open world this size. Customization runs deep as well, letting you build out your Ghost’s look and loadout, though the real hook is tactical: how you and your squad choose to hit a target changes the entire feel of a mission.

Who it’s for

If you like military shooters that reward patience and planning, or you’ve always wanted a Just Cause-style playground but with squad tactics instead of chaos physics, this is squarely for you. It’s especially good with friends since coordinating a team of up to three others turns even simple objectives into little heist plans, and there’s a separate PvP mode for people who want structured team fights instead of the open world grind. If you’re after a tight, linear campaign with a strong narrative throughline, this isn’t that. The story exists mostly to string missions together, and the open world can feel sparse in places since it prioritizes scale over density. Go in wanting a sandbox, not a tightly authored experience.

Is it worth it?

For what it offers, a massive map, real cooperative play, and freedom in how you approach nearly every mission, it holds up well against other open world shooters, especially if you’ve got a regular squad to play it with solo play is fine, but this is the kind of game that blossoms with three friends on comms. Games like this tend to age gracefully because the core loop of scouting, planning, and executing doesn’t really go stale, and there’s enough game here that you won’t blow through it in an afternoon. It’s a strong pickup for shooter fans and co-op groups looking for something to sink real hours into, particularly if you can catch it on sale.
