Metro 2033 Redux is 4A Games’ remaster of the studio’s original 2010 debut, rebuilding that grim, claustrophobic story of post-apocalyptic Moscow on the engine they later developed for Metro: Last Light. You play Artyom, a young man who has spent his entire life underground, sent on a mission through the Metro’s tunnels and stations to warn the last pockets of humanity about a threat that could finish off what the bombs started. The hook isn’t spectacle, it’s atmosphere: a world so thoroughly imagined that just walking through a station feels like reading a good novel, which makes sense given it’s adapted from Dmitry Glukhovsky’s book series.

How it plays

You’re moving between tight underground corridors and irradiated surface excursions, armed with scavenged and hand-built weapons and a gas mask you’ll need to actually manage when you’re above ground. The Redux version lets you choose between Spartan and Survival play styles, essentially letting you lean into gunplay or into slower, tenser resource management depending on what kind of experience you want out of a given playthrough. For players who want the game to hold nothing back, Ranger Mode strips out the HUD and UI entirely and sharpens the combat, turning basic survival into a constant calculation. Between human factions and mutated horrors, the game keeps switching what kind of threat you’re managing, which keeps the tension from going flat.
