About this game
Phasmophobia has been one of PC gaming’s quiet success stories for years now, the kind of game you hear about from a friend who swears their last session left them actually shaking. It’s a co-op ghost hunting game where you and your crew gear up, walk into a haunted house, and try to figure out exactly what kind of entity is sharing the building with you before it decides you’re more trouble than you’re worth. It’s still officially a work in progress, which in this case isn’t a red flag so much as the honest state of a game that’s been actively built out in public.
How it plays
The loop is investigation first, survival second. You bring real ghost hunting tools, EMF readers, spirit boxes, thermometers, night vision cameras, and use them to collect evidence while piecing together which of more than twenty ghost types you’re dealing with. Each one behaves differently, so the detective work actually matters instead of being window dressing. You can push your luck with cursed possessions that hand you useful information or abilities at the cost of your sanity, which is a nice bit of risk-reward baked right into the exploration. With up to four players, you can split duties: some people go room to room with a flashlight and shaking hands, while someone else stays in the truck watching CCTV and motion sensors, calling out warnings over comms. There are more than ten locations to haunt, five built-in difficulty tiers, daily and weekly challenges, and a custom difficulty option if your group wants to tune the chaos to your own taste.
Who it’s for
This is built for people who want horror as a shared experience rather than a solo slog. If you’ve got a regular group of friends who enjoy yelling at each other over voice chat while something unseen slams a door, this hits that spot exactly. It also rewards players who like systems and process, since identifying a ghost correctly is genuinely satisfying in a way that jump scares alone aren’t. If you’re looking for a tightly scripted single-player horror story with a beginning, middle, and end, this isn’t that, and if you’re sensitive to the game still carrying early access rough edges, that’s worth knowing going in too.
Is it worth it?
For the audience this is made for, the value proposition is strong. A game you can return to with different friend groups, different ghosts, and different difficulty settings has a lot more mileage in it than most single-player horror titles, and the price point has always been friendly relative to how much playtime it offers a dedicated group. It’s exactly the kind of title that’s worth grabbing when it’s discounted, since the entry cost for your whole squad drops and there’s essentially no risk in trying it since the core loop is so replayable. If you’ve been curious but never pulled the trigger, a sale is the moment to stop waiting.
