About this game
Sea of Thieves has been around since 2018, and this 2026 Edition is Rare’s way of packaging the pirate sandbox with a few extra trinkets: the soundtrack, an audiobook, and a reading guide, all unlocked through a free account login. The game underneath hasn’t changed in spirit. It’s still one of the better excuses to get three friends on a Discord call and see what kind of trouble a crewed ship can get into on open water.
How it plays
You and your crew take command of a ship, and from there the whole thing is about keeping that ship moving, afloat, and pointed at something worth chasing. That might mean digging up buried treasure from a faded map, hauling cargo across dangerous water, or just picking a fight with another crew because you spotted their sails on the horizon. Combat covers both ship-to-ship cannon duels and swordfights on deck, and the sea itself throws in storms, sharks, and sea monsters that don’t care whose side you’re on. None of it locks you into a single path. A voyage can turn into an ambush, a shipwreck, or a desperate bailing-out session in about thirty seconds, and that unpredictability is really the whole appeal.
Who it’s for
This is a game built for groups. If you’ve got a regular crew of friends who like messing around more than optimizing, or you’re fine jumping into a ship with strangers and letting the chaos sort itself out, there’s a lot to like here. It rewards communication, bad decisions made with confidence, and a sense of humor about losing everything to a reef five minutes after finding it. If you’re after a tightly scripted solo campaign, deep character builds, or a game that tells you exactly what to do next, this isn’t that. Sailing solo is possible, but a lot of what makes this game work depends on having other people in the boat with you.
Is it worth it?
For the right group, this is the kind of game that earns back its cost in memorable nights rather than hours logged on a clock. It’s social first, and the value really comes from how often you can get people together to sail, bicker, and occasionally mutiny against each other. If you already know you’ve got a crew for it, grabbing it during a sale is an easy call, especially with the extra media bundled into this edition. If you’re more of a solo player who prefers quiet, structured progression, it’s worth being honest with yourself before buying, sale price or not.
