About this game

Assassin’s Creed is the game that started it all: a historical action-adventure where you play Altaïr, a Master Assassin picking off corrupt power brokers during the Third Crusade. It’s less about hack-and-slash combat and more about stalking a target through a crowded medieval city before closing in for the kill. Over a decade later, it’s still the clearest look at what the series was before it became something much bigger.

How it plays

You spend most of your time moving through dense, walled cities, climbing towers to scout the area and blending into crowds to avoid guards who get suspicious if you act out of place. Each assassination target requires a bit of groundwork first, gathering information through side activities before the actual hit, and how you approach that hit (and your escape afterward) is largely up to you. Ubisoft Montreal built the whole thing around the idea that the city itself reacts to what you do: draw too much attention and guards will converge on you, stay disciplined and you can slip through unnoticed. The climbing and freerunning across rooftops is the connective tissue between missions, and it’s the thing most people remember even now.

Who it’s for

This one’s really for two kinds of players: people who want to see where the Assassin’s Creed series actually began, and history-minded gamers who like the Crusades-era setting and don’t mind a slower, more methodical pace than later entries in the franchise. If you came to the series through the newer RPG-style games and expect loot systems, skill trees, or sprawling open-world busywork, you’ll find this a much leaner experience, sometimes to the point of feeling repetitive by modern standards. It also shows its age in places, both visually and in how some mission structures loop. Players looking for a tight, atmospheric stealth game with a strong sense of place will get more out of it than players chasing modern open-world scale.

Is it worth it?

As a piece of gaming history, it’s genuinely worth experiencing, especially if you’ve played later Assassin’s Creed games and are curious how the concept started. It’s not going to overwhelm you with content the way newer entries do, and that’s sort of the point: it’s a focused, several-hour experience rather than a massive time investment. For anyone who’s on the fence, this is exactly the kind of older title that makes the most sense to pick up when it’s discounted rather than at full price, since you’re mainly paying for the historical curiosity and the foundational design rather than cutting-edge production values. If you catch it on sale, it’s an easy, low-risk way to fill in a gap in gaming history.
