About this game
Watch Dogs 2 swaps the first game’s gray, rain-soaked Chicago for sunny San Francisco, and it’s a better game for it. You’re playing Marcus Holloway, a hacker who gets pulled into Dedsec after being wrongly flagged by a surveillance system called ctOS 2.0, the same system that’s quietly profiling and manipulating everyone in the Bay Area. The hook is simple: a world where your phone is basically a weapon, and the city itself is the thing you’re hacking.
How it plays
The core of it is using Marcus’s hacking skills to mess with the environment around you, triggering traffic lights, hijacking security systems, and pulling data out of anything with a signal, all while moving through an open-world version of San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area. You’ll bounce between stealthy infiltration and straight-up chaos depending on how you want to approach a given objective, since the game leans on giving you multiple ways into most situations rather than forcing one path. The Gold Edition bundles the base game with a Deluxe Pack of cosmetic items and the Season Pass, which adds extra mission content, co-op difficulty options, and more outfits and vehicles on top of what’s already there.
Who it’s for
If you liked the idea of the first Watch Dogs but found its tone and protagonist kind of flat, this is the version that fixes a lot of that by being lighter, funnier, and more willing to let you clown around with its systems. People who enjoy open-world games where creative problem-solving matters, figuring out which gadget or hack solves a puzzle, will get the most out of it. If you want a tightly scripted, serious narrative experience, or you’re not into open-world busywork in general, this probably isn’t going to convert you. It’s also worth knowing going in that this is a 2016 game, so expect the rough edges that come with a title from that era rather than current-gen polish.
Is it worth it?
For anyone who’s into hacker-fantasy open-world games, this is a solid pickup, especially bundled as the Gold Edition, since you’re getting the full base experience plus the Season Pass content and cosmetics in one package instead of buying them piecemeal later. It’s the kind of game that rewards messing around in its systems rather than rushing the story, so it holds up well for players who like sinking real hours into an open world. If you’re patient and tend to grab games on sale rather than at launch, this is exactly the type of title worth waiting for a discount on, since the core gameplay hasn’t aged out of being fun even though the game itself is a few years old at this point.
