About this game
How it plays
You’re Marcus Holloway, a hacker in a version of San Francisco built around the idea that everything is networked and everything can be flipped against the people who built it. The city runs on ctOS 2.0, and that single fact turns the open world into a toolbox: traffic lights, security cameras, phones, cranes, even other people’s devices become levers you can pull from a distance. The reference talks about hacking into connected infrastructure, and that’s genuinely the spine of the design, you’re encouraged to size up a situation and solve it by rerouting the environment instead of just shooting through it. Gear like RC cars and a quadcopter drone give you ways to scout or reach places Marcus can’t easily climb to, and the 3D printed weapons tie into the same “build your own solution” fantasy the game leans on. There’s also a multiplayer layer, letting you drop into other people’s games cooperatively or get hunted down in more adversarial encounters, which adds a layer of unpredictability to a world that’s otherwise yours to poke at.
Who it’s for
If you like open worlds that reward curiosity over muscle memory, this is a good fit. People who enjoyed thinking three steps ahead in stealth games, or who get a kick out of turning a security system into their own personal Rube Goldberg machine, will feel right at home. It’s also a decent pick for anyone who wants a lighter, more mischievous tone than most open-world action games offer, Marcus and Dedsec are playing pranksters as much as they’re playing revolutionaries. On the other hand, if you want tight, high-stakes combat or a grim, serious story, you’ll probably find the tone and the hacking-first approach a mismatch. And if open-world checklist fatigue is already a sore spot for you, this won’t cure it.
Is it worth it?
For the kind of player who wants a big, hackable sandbox city and doesn’t need bleeding-edge graphics or a brand-new campaign to feel satisfied, this one holds up well. It’s a few years removed from day one now, which actually works in its favor: the ideas it’s built on (treating a city’s infrastructure as a puzzle box) haven’t really been copied one-for-one elsewhere, so it still feels like its own thing rather than something you’ve already played under a different name. If you’re the type who grabs games on sale to fill out a backlog of worlds to get lost in, this is exactly the kind of title that’s worth having ready to go when the price drops, low commitment to try, with enough systems depth to stick around for a while if it clicks.
