About this game

Space Invaders: IG (short for Infinity Gene) takes the game that basically invented the shoot-em-up genre and asks a strange question: what if it kept evolving in real time, right in front of you? You start with something that looks almost exactly like the 1978 original, blocky aliens marching down the screen and all, and then the game slowly mutates into something else entirely as you play. It’s a clever way to honor the source material without just remaking it.

How it plays

The loop is simple to grasp: shoot waves of invaders, survive, move forward. What makes it interesting is that the game visibly evolves as you progress, unlocking new stages, new power-ups, and new mechanics that push the visuals and the ship designs further from where you started. Taito built out a substantial amount of content here, with 143 stages split between a standard Normal Mode and a Challenge Mode that reshuffles its stage order every time you play, so no two runs feel quite identical. There’s also a feature that generates unique stages out of your own music library, which is a neat touch for a genre that usually just hands you a fixed soundtrack.
