About this game

Hogwarts Legacy is the game that made “you’re a student at Hogwarts, go live your life” feel like an actual open-world premise instead of a gimmick. Avalanche Software built out the castle, the grounds, and the Highlands around it in enough detail that just walking between classes becomes its own reward, and the Digital Deluxe Edition stacks a pile of extra cosmetics and a bonus quest on top of the base adventure. Setting it in the 1800s, well before the books, also means there’s no baggage to untangle: you’re not retreading a story everyone already knows.

How it plays

You create your own witch or wizard, get sorted, and spend the game splitting time between structured progression (classes, talents, gear crafting, potion brewing) and just wandering off to see what’s out there. Spell casting is the backbone of combat and puzzle solving alike, and you’ll be layering new spells and talent upgrades onto your build as the story pushes you toward bigger confrontations with dark wizards. The open world is stuffed with magical creatures to track down and areas that reward exploring off the beaten path rather than sprinting through the main quest. This particular edition adds the Thestral as a mount option, a Dark Arts themed battle arena and cosmetic set to mess around in, Photo Mode for capturing the castle at its best angles, and Talent Resets so you’re not locked into early build decisions. There’s also a dedicated Hogsmeade shop quest that opens up an extra dungeon and its own cosmetic rewards, plus a handful of cosmetic extras like the Azkaban prisoner outfit and an Onyx Hippogriff mount that come along with it.

Who it’s for

If you’ve ever wanted a Harry Potter game that actually lets you exist in that world rather than just retell the movies, this is the one built for that fantasy. It’s also a solid pick for anyone who likes open-world RPGs with a steady drip of collectibles, side content, and character customization to chip away at over a long stretch of time. It’s less suited to players chasing tight, combat-focused design or fast pacing. The world rewards patience and curiosity more than urgency, so if wandering an open map for its own sake isn’t your thing, the appeal is going to wear thin fast.

Is it worth it?

For the audience that clicks with it, this is the kind of game you can sink a genuinely long stretch of hours into just from exploring, and the Deluxe Edition sweetens that with mount, cosmetic, and bonus dungeon content you’d otherwise be missing entirely. It’s not the sort of experience you rush through and shelve, it’s more of a slow burn you keep coming back to. That makes it a strong candidate to grab whenever it’s discounted, since the amount of content on offer holds up well against a lower buy-in, and cosmetic bonus editions like this one are almost always better value once the price comes down rather than at launch.
