About this game
It Takes Two is a couch (or online) co-op adventure built entirely around two people playing together, and that single design choice shapes everything about it. You play as Cody and May, a couple on the verge of divorce who get magically transformed into dolls and have to navigate a household turned into a sprawling, dangerous playground. It’s from Hazelight, the studio led by Josef Fares that has made cooperative storytelling its whole identity, and this is the game where that idea really clicked into place. The hook isn’t just “play with a friend,” it’s that the entire adventure only exists because there are two of you.
How it plays
The game constantly reinvents its own rules. New areas hand each player different abilities that only work in combination with each other’s, so you’re always relearning how to move, fight, and solve puzzles alongside your partner rather than settling into one routine. One chapter might have you piloting a pair of underpants, another has you DJing in a nightclub, another has you fending off vengeful squirrels or racing through a snowglobe on a sled. It jumps between genres, platforming, shooting, puzzle-solving, even quick minigame detours, almost level by level, and the story is woven directly into those mechanics so the gameplay itself comments on what’s happening between Cody and May. Split-screen keeps both players’ perspectives visible at all times, whether you’re in the same room or playing online, and a free companion pass lets a second person join without buying their own copy.
Who it’s for
This is a game for two specific people, not one. If you’ve got a regular co-op partner, a partner-partner, a sibling, a close friend, someone you play games with consistently, this is one of the best reasons to sit down together. It rewards people who like variety and don’t mind a game that refuses to settle into a single genre for more than an hour. It’s a poor fit for solo players since there’s no meaningful single-player mode, and it’s not for anyone looking for a slow, meditative experience: it’s busy, fast-moving, and occasionally chaotic by design. If your co-op partner gets frustrated by frequent control changes or steep-ish puzzle sections, temper expectations, some sections ask more of players than a typical drop-in co-op game.
Is it worth it?
For two people who actually finish it together, this is one of the strongest value propositions in co-op gaming, largely because you only need one copy between you thanks to the friend’s pass. That effectively halves the cost for whoever’s buying, and the sheer amount of distinct gameplay ideas packed into one story means you’re rarely doing the same thing for very long. It’s exactly the kind of game worth grabbing when it’s discounted, since the entry cost for the household is already low and a sale just sweetens an already good deal. The main caveat is logistical rather than financial: you need someone available and willing to commit to playing it with you, since it doesn’t work any other way.
