About this game
Sonic Mania is what happens when the people who grew up loving classic Sonic get their hands on the actual toolset and full creative control. Instead of forcing the character into another 3D experiment, it goes back to the flat, fast, momentum-driven platforming that made him popular in the first place, and it does that with a level of craft that feels less like nostalgia bait and more like the games the Genesis era was building toward.
How it plays
You run through 2D stages at high speed, choosing between Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, each with a distinct way of getting through the level. Sonic is about pure speed and spin-based moves, Tails can fly over hazards and shortcuts, and Knuckles glides and climbs to muscle through obstacles the others can’t. The zones mix reworked classic locations with new twists on their layouts, so familiar backdrops keep surprising you with new routes, hazards, and boss fights against Eggman’s robots. It runs smooth and responsive, which matters more than almost anything else in a game built around split-second platforming decisions. There’s also a head-to-head mode for competing against another player and a cooperative option for playing alongside a friend, so it’s not purely a solo experience if you don’t want it to be.
Who it’s for
This is an easy recommendation for anyone who played Sonic in the 90s and has wondered if a new game could actually capture that feeling instead of just referencing it. It’s also a genuinely good pick for platformer fans in general, even ones with no Sonic history, since the level design rewards learning routes and chasing speed rather than relying on brand recognition to carry it. Where it’s less of a fit is for players who want a slower, more methodical platformer or who bounce off games that expect you to replay stages to get good at them. Momentum-based, occasionally punishing level layouts aren’t for everyone, and if that style already frustrates you in other games, this won’t convert you.
Is it worth it?
For what it delivers, a tightly designed, replayable platformer with multiple characters and both competitive and cooperative options, this is the kind of game that holds up well over repeated sessions rather than being a one-and-done experience. It’s not a long epic, but that’s kind of the point: you come back to shave time off runs, master a stage’s shortcuts, or just enjoy the character switching. If you already know you like 2D platformers, this isn’t a game you need a deep discount to justify. That said, since it’s the kind of title that shows up in Xbox sales, it’s absolutely worth grabbing whenever it’s marked down rather than paying full price on impulse.
