Mortal Kombat 1 is NetherRealm Studios doing what it does best: taking a franchise people have loved (or feared) since the arcade days and rebuilding it from the ground up. This isn’t a sequel picking up where the last story left off. It’s a full reset, with the timeline reshaped by Fire God Liu Kang, which gives the studio a clean excuse to reintroduce familiar fighters in new roles and relationships. If you’ve followed the series for years, that alone is the hook: everyone you know, but the rules of their world have changed.

How it plays

At the heart of it is still one on one fighting, brutal combos, and finishers that make you wince a little. What NetherRealm changed this time is the underlying fighting system, which shapes how combos, specials, and matchups feel compared to earlier entries in the series. Layered on top of that are the new game modes and, of course, fatalities, the series’ signature over the top finishing moves that have basically become their own genre punchline at this point. The moment to moment loop is what fighting game fans expect: learn a character’s toolkit, punish mistakes, string together damage, and finish strong. The wrapping around that loop, story, presentation, character reinvention, is where this entry tries to feel like a fresh start rather than another roster update.

Who it’s for

This one’s an easy recommend if you already have history with Mortal Kombat, whether that’s the older 2D games or the more recent cinematic reboots. Fighting game fans in general will find plenty to sink into, especially anyone who likes learning a character inside and out and grinding matchups. If you enjoy a story mode with real production value instead of just menu text between fights, that’s also part of the appeal here. On the flip side, if gore and stylized violence aren’t your thing, this is not the series that’s going to change your mind, the fatalities are the point, not a side dish. And if you bounce off fighting games because of execution-heavy inputs, that friction hasn’t gone away just because the roster looks different.

Is it worth it?

For a genre fan, this is the kind of game worth having in the library, since it’s a current-generation entry from a studio with a long track record in this specific space, and the reworked systems and new modes give it more to do than a typical yearly refresh.
