About this game

Aspyr’s Legacy Edition brings back a game that’s a little unusual in the Lord of the Rings catalog: instead of retracing the Fellowship’s steps, it drops you into a war being fought in parallel to it. While Frodo and Sam are trudging toward Mount Doom, a Black Numenorean warlord named Agandaur is massing an army in the ruined city of Fornost, and it falls to a scrappier, less famous trio of heroes to stop him. It’s a darker, bloodier take on Middle-earth than most adaptations bother with, and that alone makes it worth a look for anyone who’s played every Aragorn-and-friends retelling and wants a different angle on the same war.

How it plays

You pick one of three heroes, a Dunedain Ranger built around stealth and ranged precision, an Elven Loremaster who leans on magic and healing, or a Dwarven Champion who just wants to hit things until they stop moving, and you can swap freely between them. The whole game is built for co-op, with room for up to two friends to join in online or via split-screen, so this is fundamentally a game about three different combat styles covering for each other rather than one hero doing everything. Underneath the combat there’s a full RPG layer: skills, gear, and loot that actually change how your character plays, not just cosmetic upgrades. You’ll also get to call in a Great Eagle for support in a pinch, run into familiar faces like Gandalf and Elrond along the way, and pass through recognizable locations like Rivendell and Mirkwood while fighting through orcs, trolls, wargs, and worse.

Who it’s for

This is squarely for people who want an action RPG first and a Tolkien tourist experience second, ideally with friends. If you and two other people grew up loving that “orcs by the thousand, loot by the hundred” loop, the character variety here is exactly the kind of thing that keeps a co-op session interesting over a long stretch, since nobody’s stuck playing the same role the whole time. It’s less exciting if you’re after a single-player narrative epic or a game that treats the source material with reverence rather than grit. If mature, blood-heavy combat doesn’t appeal, or you specifically want to play as characters from the books rather than alongside them, this one isn’t really built for you.

Is it worth it?

For the crowd this is aimed at, three-player co-op action RPG fans who like a Tolkien backdrop, this is the kind of game that earns its keep by being played with friends over multiple sessions rather than blitzed through solo in a weekend. The class variety and gear progression give it legs that a lot of licensed action games don’t bother with.
