Cardpocalypse Standard Edition

About this free game

Cardpocalypse is a single-player RPG that hands you a card game and a middle school hallway and asks you to survive both. You play as Jess, a 10-year-old who manages to get her school’s most popular collectible card game banned on her very first day, which pushes the whole thing underground and, eventually, very literally into the real world when the game’s mutants start showing up outside the cards. It’s a coming-of-age story wrapped around a deck-building battler, built by Gambrinous, the studio behind Guild of Dungeoneering, so there’s real pedigree behind the card design here.

How it plays

The backbone of Cardpocalypse is building decks around Champion cards, each with its own abilities, and fighting until you knock your opponent’s Champion down to zero health. Champions transform into MEGA forms once they’re bloodied, hitting harder and unlocking new tricks, which keeps matches from feeling static. Outside of battles, you’re wandering Dudsdale Elementary talking to classmates, picking up quests, and earning cards, stickers, and candy that you can trade away or hoard. The twist that makes it more than a standard card game is that rules themselves are fair territory: house rules, permanent card edits, renaming cards, and even crafting new ones with the in-game magazine are all on the table, and none of it can be undone once you commit. There’s also a Gauntlet Mode tacked on, a roguelike spin where you pick a Champion and climb through escalating fights, drafting new cards and rules after each win.

Who it’s for

If you grew up trading cards at recess or you just like deckbuilders with a story attached, this one’s aimed squarely at you. The 90’s setting isn’t just decoration either, it shapes the humor and the stakes of the narrative. People who want a game about consequences will appreciate that your choices, especially the permanent ones around card and rule changes, actually stick. On the other hand, if you’re after competitive multiplayer card battling or a long, sprawling campaign, this is a smaller, narrative-first experience and you should adjust expectations accordingly. It’s also a fine pick for anyone who wants something lower-stakes and character-driven rather than mechanically deep.

Is it worth grabbing?

For what it is, a self-contained single-player RPG with a distinct card game hook, this is an easy one to add to your library, especially if it’s free. There’s no ongoing cost to holding onto it, and a card-battling RPG with a story and a Gauntlet mode gives you more than one reason to boot it up. It’s best suited to players who enjoy narrative RPGs with a lighter touch and don’t mind a game that leans into nostalgia rather than raw complexity. If deckbuilders and 90’s kid stories both sound appealing, it’s worth the download.
