About this game
Total War: WARHAMMER III is Creative Assembly’s closing chapter in a trilogy that mashes turn-based empire building together with massive real-time battles, all wrapped in the over-the-top fantasy of Games Workshop’s Warhammer setting. This entry pushes the story into the Realm of Chaos itself, pitting the four ruinous powers against the newly playable forces of Kislev and Grand Cathay. If you’ve ever wanted to command a screaming horde of daemons or a transforming dragon general, this is the game that lets you do both in the same campaign map.
How it plays
The loop will feel familiar if you’ve touched any Total War game: on the campaign map you recruit armies, manage settlements, research technology, and juggle diplomacy with rival factions, then drop into real-time battles where formation, terrain, and unit matchups decide the outcome. What sets WARHAMMER III apart is scale and variety. Ten legendary lords anchor the campaign, from a Daemon Prince you can physically customize with different bodies and powers to Kislev’s Ice Queen, and each race plays with genuinely different mechanics rather than reskinned versions of the same faction. Multiplayer expands the formula too, with a large-scale cooperative campaign set in the Realm of Chaos, a head-to-head Domination mode, and dedicated story campaigns for Kislev and Grand Cathay alongside the usual ranked and custom battles.
Who it’s for
This is a strategy game through and through, so it’s built for people who like planning turns, reading unit stat sheets, and slowly building an empire before things get loud. If you enjoy Total War already, or you’re a Warhammer fan who wants to see the setting’s lore played out on a huge map, there’s a lot here to sink into. The customizable Daemon Prince and monstrous rosters also give it appeal for players who just want spectacle over min-maxed strategy. On the other hand, if turn-based campaign layers make your eyes glaze over, or you want something you can pick up for fifteen minutes and put down, this isn’t that game. The learning curve is real, and getting comfortable with faction mechanics, army composition, and battle tactics takes time.
Is it worth it?
For strategy fans, this is the kind of game that rewards a long-term investment rather than a quick playthrough, since a single campaign can eat dozens of hours once you factor in exploring different lords and races. That makes it a strong candidate to grab during a sale rather than at launch price, especially if you’re new to the series and want to see whether the genre clicks before committing further. Warhammer devotees who already know they want this world’s factions and lore will likely get their money’s worth regardless, but price-conscious strategy fans should treat a discount as the right moment to jump in.
