About this game

The Wild Eight drops a plane load of strangers into the Alaskan backcountry and makes them figure out, together or alone, why the crash happened and what’s actually out there watching them. It’s a survival game first, but the premise gives the usual scavenge-and-craft loop a reason to keep pulling you forward instead of just keeping you alive.

How it plays

You’re one of a group of survivors (up to eight if you bring friends online) who need to build a working camp, gather supplies, and craft gear before the Alaskan wilderness gets the better of you. That means balancing short-term needs like warmth and food against the longer game of upgrading your equipment so you can push further out. Venture too far without being ready and you’ll run into blizzards and predators that are actively trying to end your run. The RPG and simulation elements show up in how your camp and gear evolve over time, while the exploration side sends you into old laboratories and abandoned sites that clearly have more going on than a simple crash would explain. It plays fine solo, but the structure is clearly built with cooperation in mind, splitting up tasks like hunting, hauling resources, and defending camp.

Who it’s for

If you like survival games where the crafting and base-building actually matter, and you’ve got friends willing to brave a frozen map with you, this is an easy recommendation. The co-op framing gives it a different flavor than the usual lone-wolf survival sim, since decisions about who hunts and who stays back to build actually have weight. Go in solo, though, and be honest with yourself about whether you enjoy that genre without a safety net, because the difficulty curve from weather and wildlife is clearly tuned with a group in mind. If survival-crafting games generally wear you out, or you want a tightly scripted story over systemic emergent play, this probably isn’t the one to break that pattern.

Is it worth it?

For anyone who already knows they like this genre, The Wild Eight earns its keep by giving the grind an actual mystery to chase instead of survival for survival’s sake, and the co-op angle adds replay value that solo survival games often lack. It’s the kind of game that rewards patience, since camp upgrades and gear progression take real time to pay off. If you’re on the fence, it’s a much easier recommendation picked up during a sale with a few friends than paid for at full attention and played solo on a whim. Grabbing it while it’s discounted is a sensible way to get a group together and see if the loop clicks before committing more time than money.
