About this game
The Last Campfire is a quiet little puzzle adventure from Hello Games, the studio better known for No Man’s Sky, and it couldn’t be a more different kind of project. You play as an ember who’s wandered off from the main fire and gotten stuck in a strange, half-forgotten world. There’s no combat, no inventory grind, no pressure. Just a small glowing creature trying to find its way home through environments that feel handmade and a little melancholy, in the best way.
How it plays
The whole game is built around exploration and environmental puzzles. You wander through the forest and the ruins beyond it, running into lost souls who’ve given up and curled into themselves, literally, and your job is to help them work through whatever’s holding them back. Each one unlocks a small, self-contained puzzle area, usually involving pushing blocks, lighting things, or figuring out how pieces of the environment interact. None of it is twitchy or reflex-based. It’s the kind of game where you stop, look at a room, and think your way through it rather than react your way through it. The connective tissue between puzzles is just walking and looking, taking in the character designs and the world’s odd, gentle sense of humor, before you eventually gather what you need to light the campfire that gives the game its name.
Who it’s for
This is a great fit if you want something cozy to unwind with, something you can hand to a less experienced or younger player, or something to play when you’re burnt out on games that demand constant attention and skill checks. The puzzles are satisfying without being brutal, and the tone stays warm even when the story touches on heavier feelings like grief and self-doubt. If you need stakes, difficulty, or a long campaign to feel like a game was worth your time, this one will probably leave you wanting. It’s also not an open-world game in any real sense, so don’t go in expecting a sprawling map to lose yourself in.
Is it worth it?
For what it is, a short, polished, emotionally gentle puzzle adventure, it delivers exactly what it promises without overstaying its welcome. It’s not the kind of game you measure in hours per dollar the way you would an RPG, it’s the kind you measure in whether it left you feeling something by the end. Games like this tend to be perfect sale pickups: low commitment, easy to fit into a quiet weekend, and the kind of thing that’s nice to have in your library for when you want to play something that isn’t trying to stress you out. If it’s discounted, it’s a pretty safe bet for the mood it’s aiming for.
